Some Tips Help You Enjoy the Web
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR COMPUTER
1. IS YOUR WEB BROWSER UP TO DATE?
We get visitor statistics and it is clear that some are operating with out of date browsers. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5 or later. Version 6 is available to download free at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp even for those with Macs.
For those who insist upon Netscape, at least, upgrade to Version 6 at
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/

Either will enhance your web browsing experience for all sites.
On slow connections like uniserve it will take quite awhile to download either of the new browsers but it is worth the investment.
2. IS YOUR SCREEN RESOLUTION UP TO DATE?
Set your computer screen resolution to 800X600 or higher for newer large monitor computers.  800X600 is the screen size most web sites are designed for and most show without a lot of scrolling around when your computer is set this way. Just right click on your desktop screen most anywhere and Select Properties/Settings and down at the right you will see a slider you can move to the new setting. On some older computers and for Windows 3.1 you may have to restart your computer for the new resolution to take affect or on really old ones, it won't work.
3. Trouble with the Menus on the left side. Just go slow BUT if it is driving you mad please do 2 things. One send me an email and tell me what the problem is so it can be fixed for the next re-write of the site (Email) and Two, click on the menu item called site map. There you will see all the pages laid out to just click and go to. A route to this is also bottom right on the Home page.
4. Some of the print too small. The newer versions of Windows and Apples have excellent add-ins to make it easier to see. There are too many variations to describe here but help is at the Centre. You might enjoy just having a good sized magnifying glass on the screen and here is one for you as the smallest of programs (only 8Kb - smaller then this typing). Click Here and select open. It does not install anything. A box will open with whatever is under your cursor enlarged. You can enlarge the box by dragging the borders. You can change the amount of magnification by just hitting your + and - keys. Right click the box for more choices. Try it - it does not bite! Just click the X in the top right to make it go away.
5. Some of the Fun Stuff is run by JavaScript - that is a special program which came with every browser except initial version of Windows XP! A patch called SP1 adds it in and if you have updated your browser with this - no problem. If not you should update for other reasons (like security) but for those on a slow telephone connection it is difficult as it is a large download. You can add just Javascript very easy. Just go to http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp and let it happen. It is fast and easy and will do NO harm to your computer even if you already have the JavaScript installed and did not know it.
6. What about those PDF or Adobe Acrobat files? We always try and give you an alternate web style way of viewing a file but PDF is a format which produces almost exact copies of original documents and it prints up very well - especially forms. Everyone should consider having the FREE reader installed on their computer but for some on slow internet connections this is tough as it is a large download. You may be able to find someone with it on a disk - it is on many with other programs. For those who are happy to down load the program go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

SOME THINGS TO HELP ENJOY THIS SITE

1. The Main Home page. Pause and look around. Some features are:
• The Menus on the top of the page expand to give you more choices and help you get right to where you want.
• For Activities that have a special page on the site the little Shortcuts on top of the Menus can get you there FAST.
• Text with underlining anywhere on the page is a link to something.
• YOUR MONTHLY CALENDAR OF DINING ROOM DELIGHTS is available both on the main Menu and by the link above the list of new things
• Email to the Centre is available on every page by just clicking on the Email graphic on the left or the words Email Us on the left side of the page.
• Every time something new is posted on the site, it will be noted in the 'Latest Postings on Your Web Site' section to save you having to search for new things. You should go exploring once in awhile anyway.
• ALWAYS take a look at the Special Notices section on the right side. Anything out of the ordinary will be posted here.
• With the Seashell Echo Newsletter section you can read not only the current issue but review past ones at your leisure.

2. About Us Heading on Main Menu (all menu items in italics)
There are often TOP Menus on a page you can click to quickly get down to a special section.
Main Page - the top of the About Us page
Board of Directors - Guess who
Regular Meetings- Scheduling of some of the major meeting of the Centre such as Director's Meetings
- a brief history of the Centre
Important Documents - an archive of papers and publications of the Centre
Membership - rules and an easy to print application

3. NEWS Heading
Event Calendar - another way to get to this besides the calendar graphic below the Main Menu
Monthly Menu - the Dining room delights. Also can get through the icon on the Home page below the calendar.
Seashell Echo - another way to read it besides the link on the Home page right
Special Notes - Highlighting things we want to highlight!
Volunteer Gallery - our Honour Role of Volunteers. Visit and give them a hug.

4. Activities is the BIG one! From time to time this listing will change depending on what is going on.
Regular - are those activities which have a schedule each week or month. Many have their own web pages within the site and you can get to these by a) going to the Regular page and selecting the one you want; b) using one of the shortcuts on the Home Page or c) selecting from the list which appears on the Main Menu as you highlight Regular.
Note: Each Activity is responsible for keeping up the content of its own page so don't jump on your Webmaster about content.
Committees - your Centre has many committees to run everything. Here they are listed in 3 different ways for your convenience. Just click in hyperlinks (underlined text) to get going.
Photo Albums - as time goes on photos of events and members will accumulate. A package of photos for a special activity will result in an album of pictures on that activity's page. All albums will also be accessible here and of course any that are made for groups without their own page.
Albums are easy to work. You can navigate the pages of the album using the arrows at the top and the "House" takes you Home - back to a main web site page. Click on any picture you want to see it larger with its description and you are in the album and can navigate there with the arrows too. It is pretty intuitive so just plunge in.
Special Events - are for those super schedule special things that go on - Potlucks and parties. Check here to stay up to date and not miss anything. Most will be shown on the Calendar of Events too.

5. Helpful things - just trying to help you!
Senior's Help - a main page for articles and notices specifically directed at Seniors and especially those in Sechelt.
General - for most anything of help
Medical - reserved for these matters
Links - hundreds of links to other web sites everywhere that may be useful and of interest to Centre members. They are organized in sections so you can click and go straight to your interest. Note the 'Back to Top' link everywhere to help you jump back to the main menu. Also note the appeal for advice of errors and for suggestions for new links or new categories.
Important to note is that Links are set up so that when you go to another site it opens in a new version of your browser. In this way you never really leave secheltseniors.com. It is still open to jump back to. If you are really done with us then close secheltseniors with the X top right. The same with pages you go to - to leave them, close the browser for them with the X.
Tips for this Site - Well you found it or you wouldn't be reading this. You can get here through the Home page logo on the left or through this Helpful things item on the main Menu.

6. Fun Stuff - Play On Line.  Just try the jigsaw or whatever other silly thing we have up for you.

7. Site Map - a menu of all the pages in the site so you can click around using text and you can see what all there is.

The following are not necessarily applicable to the current site but may apply depending on what is posted. They are just for a "what if we get them" guidance (saves your webmaster doing more typing later).

• Voting - where there is a poll, just click on your selection and then click Vote. You can review the results by clicking the 'View Stat" words. Note: for those with 'popper-stoppers', these may interfere if not disengaged.

• Pictures and documents can be downloaded or printed but the procedure varies depending on the item. Some are 'pictures' - .jpg or .gif and so save as pictures (right click and select "Save picture as"). Others are standard web text you can highlight/save and paste into notebook or Word or whatever.

ENJOY - ENJOY AND COME BACK OFTEN TO STAY UP TO DATE
